THE LEGALS

Ok, so the whole point of your wedding day is legally marrying your partner, right?

So what do you need to do to tick the boxes to be legally wed?

Your marriage must be officiated by a registered Marriage Celebrant

So first of all, find your chosen celebrant, book their services and it is their role to take care of the legal side of your union. However its a great idea to become of those legal requirements yourself.

You need to complete a Notice of Intent to Marry Form.

Which is exactly as it sounds, a notice that you intend to marry.

This must be completed at least one month before the wedding day.

You will also need to provide either your passport or both your birth certificate and drivers license.

Your ceremony must contain these three things:

The Monitum

The Monitum is the following paragraph which must be included in yo0ur ceremony.

"I Janelle Bridge am duly authorised by law to solemnise marriages according to law, before you are joined in marriage in my presence and the presence of these witnesses I am to remind you of the solemn and binding nature of the relationship into which you are now about to enter. Marriage in Australia, is the union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life .

(Hooray for marriage equality!!)

The "Asking of Consent'

Where you celebrant asks, do you John Johannsen, take Mathew Smith to be your lawfully wedding husband?"

You must say "I do" " I will" or "yes"

Your Vows

Your vows are simply your promises to each other, but they must contain the following sentence "In the presence of these witnesses, I Sarah Jane White, take you Ryan Mathew Spencer to be my lawful husband"
